Blue Ventures began in 2003 working with fishing villages in southwest Madagascar to reverse the collapse of octopus and reef fisheries. It pioneered temporary octopus fishery closures that evolved into community-run Locally Managed Marine Areas, now replicated nationwide through the Malagasy-led MIHARI network. Today Blue Ventures supports 219 LMMA sites covering nearly a fifth of Madagascar's inshore seabed, and has helped adapt its community-led model with partners in ten other countries including Kenya, Tanzania and Indonesia.
