Solar and Wind Micro-Grids for Off-Grid Herding Villages in the West Bank
by Comet-ME (Community, Energy and Technology in the Middle East) ยท HQ ๐ฎ๐ฑ Israel
Since the late 2000s, Comet-ME has installed hybrid solar-and-wind mini-grids for Palestinian herding communities living in Area C of the West Bank, where Israeli planning restrictions largely prohibit connection to the national power grid or construction of permanent infrastructure. The mini-grids power homes, water pumps, milking machines, and medical refrigeration, replacing polluting diesel generators and freeing women from hours spent hauling water and hand-churning butter. Comet-ME's water program, launched in 2013, has since brought clean-water systems to more than 500 households. Today the organization provides energy services to around 140 communities, 2,400 households, and more than 10,000 people across the South Hebron Hills and wider West Bank.
