Foundation Conservation Carpathia works in the Southern Carpathians of Romania, purchasing degraded forests, alpine pastures and spruce monocultures to convert them into strictly protected land where natural processes can resume. The foundation has acquired over 28,000 hectares, restored nearly 2,000 hectares of clear-cuts through active reforestation, and runs rangers who patrol 75,000 hectares to stop illegal logging. It also reintroduces keystone species such as European bison, working toward a vision of a roughly 200,000-hectare wild core within one of Europe's last large old-growth forest landscapes.
