DC Central Kitchen, founded in 1989 in Washington DC, recovers surplus food from farms, grocers, and events and transforms it into scratch-cooked meals for schools, shelters, and recovery programs. Its culinary job training program gives unemployed and formerly incarcerated residents paid kitchen apprenticeships that lead to food-service careers. In May 2024 the organization served its 50 millionth meal since founding.
