Feldheim, a small village in Brandenburg, Germany, became the country's first fully energy self-sufficient community in 2010, generating its own electricity and heat from a resident-owned wind farm, a biogas plant and a woodchip heating system. The village's grids run independently of the national network, and profits stay with local landowners and the community energy company. The Neue Energien Forum visitor centre now welcomes thousands of visitors each year to see the model up close.
