Gorongosa National Park's large mammal populations were decimated during Mozambique's 1977-1992 civil war, with elephants falling from roughly 2,500 to under 250. Since 2008, a partnership between the Mozambican government and the Carr Foundation has rebuilt anti-poaching enforcement, restored habitat and engaged surrounding communities in conservation and livelihoods programs. A 2024 aerial survey counted 110,513 large animals in the park, including an all-time-high elephant population of 873, with no evidence of poaching.
