Launched by the African Union in 2007 and coordinated with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, the Great Green Wall aims to restore degraded land across more than 11 Sahelian countries. Its 2030 goals are to restore 100 million hectares, sequester 250 million tons of carbon, and create 10 million green jobs. As of 2024 roughly 30 million hectares had been restored, about 30% of the target.
