Hippo Roller — Rolling Water Home

Invented in South Africa in the 1990s, the Hippo Roller is a rugged 90-litre drum that rolls along the ground, replacing the back-breaking work of carrying water buckets on the head. The social enterprise has distributed rollers across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, freeing time for school and work, reducing injury, and even shifting gender norms around water collection. Each roller lasts for years in harsh rural conditions.
