Océanium, a marine conservation association active in Senegal since the 1990s, launched mass mangrove reforestation campaigns in the Casamance and Sine-Saloum deltas starting in 2006. Working with roughly 350 villages and 200,000 local participants, it became the largest mangrove restoration program in the world. The restored mangroves protect rice paddies from salt intrusion, rebuild fish nurseries, and store carbon.
