Crayweed, a golden seaweed that once formed dense underwater forests along Sydney's coastline, vanished from the city's reefs decades ago due to sewage pollution. Operation Crayweed, led by researchers at UNSW Sydney and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science with community volunteers, transplants healthy crayweed onto bare reefs to re-establish self-sustaining populations. Over a decade it has targeted 16 sites, seven of which now host established self-sustaining crayweed forests covering more than two hectares.
