The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), founded in 1968, rescues, rehabilitates, and releases sick, injured, oiled, and orphaned seabirds from centers in Cape Town and Gqeberha. Its work is critical for the African penguin, now critically endangered, with SANCCOB hand-rearing thousands of abandoned chicks and achieving an 81% release rate. In a typical year it treats around 2,500 seabirds.
