Restoring Brazil's Vanishing Atlantic Forest

SOS Mata Atlântica, founded in 1986, works to protect and restore Brazil's Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), a biodiversity hotspot reduced to a small fraction of its original extent by centuries of clearing for agriculture and cities. The organization runs its own native-seedling nursery, monitors forest cover by satellite every year, and partners with more than 1,700 companies and landowners on restoration contracts. It has supported the planting of over 43 million native seedlings across roughly 24,700 hectares of former farmland and pasture.
