Virunga National Park in eastern DR Congo, managed by the Virunga Foundation in partnership with the Congolese wildlife authority, shelters around 350 mountain gorillas amid one of the world's most complex conflict zones. Its rangers protect the park at enormous personal risk, with over 200 killed in three decades. The park's Virunga Alliance builds hydroelectric plants that supply clean power to the region, creating livelihoods that offer alternatives to armed groups.
