The Whale Sanctuary Project, established in 2016, is constructing a permanent seaside retirement sanctuary for beluga whales and orcas retired from marine parks and aquariums. The site, a netted cove in Port Hilford Bay, Nova Scotia, is designed to hold up to 8-10 belugas and 2-3 orcas in a far more natural ocean environment than a concrete tank. As of early 2026 the project holds a Crown lease for the site and is entering its construction phase.
